3G Network Retirement

3G sunset refers to the gradual retirement of all the 3G networks in Malaysia. It is an initiative that is part of JENDELA, the government’s digital infrastructure plan with a shared aspiration for nationwide coverage and consistent quality of experience for everyone. To help achieve JENDELA’s aspirations, the gradual retirement of 3G networks has been earmarked as an important step.

Telco services are made possible with spectrum, which are frequency bands that are used for communication purposes. Each telco is allocated certain spectrum bands in order to enable 3G services. With 3G sunset, telcos can “re-farm” or repurpose these spectrum bands for 4G services instead.

3G sunset will take place in 3 phases, with the aim of shutting down ALL 3G networks by end 2021. Phase 1 was the planning stage, completed in the Q3-Q4 2020. Phase 2 is the implementation stage whereby the 3G networks will progressively be thinned and ultimately shut down by end of 2021. All telcos will continue improve its 4G network to provide wider coverage and higher data speeds. Phase 3 (Q1-Q2 2022) will be the post 3G Sunset stage which involves the monitoring of network optimisation, network performance and customer experience.

3G sunset is a nationwide initiative by the government and supported by all telco. The retirement will be done progressively in phases.

The ultimate goal of 3G sunset is to enhance the quality of service to the public for a greater experience in internet browsing, video streaming and online services. In other words, we can notice improvement in many ways including:

  • Higher data speeds
  • Lower latency
  • Improved network reliability and stability
  • Enhancing the quality of experience
  • Ultra HD quality calls with VoLTE

All 3G device users will be impacted .Please check your phone specifications, if it is 4G and VoLTE capable, you will not be impacted.

We encourage all U Mobile customers currently on a feature phone or 3G-only device to upgrade their devices to 4G and VoLTE-capable, so that they may continue to enjoy a superior mobile experience and ultra-HD quality calls with VoLTE when 3G networks are retired. Please contact your Enterprise Account Manager or Enterprise Business Partner or visit nearby U Mobile branches and distributors or U Mobile website for affordable device bundle plans that are 4G and VoLTE-capable.

If customers are already using a 4G device, they will experience no issues for data services when 3G sunset takes place. To ensure optimal experience for voice services, we encourage customers holding older 4G devices (which are not VoLTE-capable) or 3G-only devices to upgrade to a 4G VoLTE-capable device as soon as possible. Please contact your Enterprise Account Manager or Enterprise Business Partner for affordable device bundle plans that are 4G and VoLTE-capable.

If you are already on a 4G device, you will be automatically connected to a 4G network. However, if you have manually disabled the 4G option in your device settings, 4G connection will be disabled. We advise customers to check their device settings to ensure 4G connection is enabled.
